To Panic or Not to Panic

For those of you who do not live close by, Tarrant County is in complete turmoil over the Swine Flu. Fort Worth ISD has closed all schools until May 8th. No Taks tests, no UIL activities, no make-up days, no nothing, nada, szilch.

Our local radio station read a letter from a Doctor in South TX who said this particular strain is several times worse than what the media is reporting. At least half of all infected patients will end up on respirators. Jackson's daycare sent home three pages of how to keep from spreading this flu and listed respiratory illness as one of the symptoms.

Jackson had pneumonia three times last year. Erring on the side of caution, I pulled him from day care today and will keep him at home. My boss was VERY gracious to give me that option and I took advantage. It was a hard decision, at the time, to make because I didn't want to over-react to what so far seems to be only media hype. Looking back, I am very fortunate to have a job and a boss who will allow me this opportunity to be that neurotic mom and take care of my little boy. Now, it's a no brainer.

What it boils down to - the Fort Worth ISD must know something I do not. If all of this does blow over without the huge pandemic they are claiming, I will be grateful. BUT, I will also be quite angry for their crying wolf. The worst consequence is the next time, when we really do need to be careful - is anyone going to listen?

So, J and I will camp out at home. I will try and get some work done while a little voice asks repeatedly, "what are you dooning" "I watch carkoons", "I go outside", "I shooee", "I hungy", I want whemonade", "hey mom". Best things in the world to hear.
