This was our first year for soccer, our first organized sport. It has been a blast, although challenging for me to keep my mouth shut on the sideline. Jackson's coach, Sammy, is a phenomenal coach with a terrific player for a son. Ethan is 5 years old and plays soccer like no one I have seen on any other team. If he gets the ball, we just scored. However, there is another side to Ethan and his dad that clearly shows their sportsmanship during the game.
More often than not, Ethan hangs back and lets the other kids have a chance to play. He repeatedly steals the ball from the opposition if they get too close to our goal and off he goes to score a point for Team Ice. Having watched every game though, I was lucky enough to witness this sportsmanship I speak of. Ethan was dribbling the ball fast towards the goal, Jacob, our team mate was running along beside and I watched Ethan wave him towards the goal where he passed the ball so Jacob could feel the victory of making a goal. Ethan does this all the time for his team members. It is awesome to watch this 5 year old boy, put aside his own ambitions for that of his team mates.
How is Jackson at the game? My best description would be distracted. He is not all that aggressive, however, he has almost come to blows with another play for hitting him. He will not steal the ball, but you elbow him or punch and he will fight back. There have been several instances where Jackson is at the goal, all he has to do is kick the ball 2 feet and he scored, but by the time he has hesitated and backed up to line up his shot, the other team has arrived and stolen the ball. He has improved greatly throughout the season though, especially under Coach Sammy. I am very grateful Jackson's first venture into sports has been such a positive one. Will he play again? Not sure, he has karate on the mind.
