PAGOSA SPRINGS 2012

WHAT A GREAT TRIP! Well, according to me. Ask Tony and you will get a different story. Day 2 of skiing and he hurt is "good" knee and was out for the week. Which was a complete shame, because it was FANTASTIC snow. (SSSHHHH, don't tell him, I am trying not to rub it in). Wolf Creek Pass received over 17" of snow while we where there. Pagosa Springs, the town where we stayed, also received snow, but probably no more than 6", if that.

My parents, Nana & Papa went with us this trip and it was nice to spend that time with them. Papa got pulled over on the way up for speeding, but thankfully received a warning. Not sure why that still makes me chuckle. Nana even flipped us the bird as they drove by because we didn't get stopped.

Pagosa Springs is really not more than a wide spot in the road, where the Ute Indians settled around the Hot Springs. Did we partake in the Springs, no because every time we drove by the first couple of days, I kept accusing my boys of passing gas until I realized it was the springs. They stunk!!!

Tuesday evening we took a sleigh ride (well they told us it was a sleigh, but it was a trailer with wheels) to a cabin in the woods and had a great meal. Cabin had no electricity and this lady made Prime Rib with a wood burning stove. Atmosphere was super cool. Papa even used the outhouse. Suggestions to them - call it a trailer, not a sleigh and don't leave your customers stranded in the parking lot trying to get their vehicle unstuck from the snow. Yes, Tony saved the day, bad knee and all while it was snowing, snowing, snowing.

Tony was a good sport and drove me and Jackson back up that mountain as much as we wanted. I took advantage of every day except Monday (doctor day) and Tuesday as they were getting tons of snow at Wolf Creek, but the winds were terrible.

This year, I reluctantly let go of Jackson's harness after the first day. He did awesome, but Dear Lord, he skies fast. Scares me to death. He crashed once and tearfully told me that is was my fault because I was "skeeming at him". Sorry kid, your speed freaks your mother out.

Nana and Papa got to see Jackson ski and also got nostalgic for the sport as they have alot of fun memories skiing with their siblings and their spouses pre kids. In hearing the stories, they did a whole lot more partying than we do, hope they weren't bored with us young folks.

On Wednesday, I stopped at the top and took the picture that is the last one in the video. Those few minutes of having my glove off froze my hand completely. I skied down with it tucked in my coat, under my arm and called it a day. It tingled for several hours after that - that is how cold it was up top.

The last day I skied, Thursday, the snow was coming down and Tony did not know if we could even get to the ski area, but again, he did it. By 10:00 am they already had 7" for that day and it was perfect powder. Cold with the wind, but since I didn't have an ounce of skin showing, no problem. I HAD A BLAST!!! I felt so bad for Tony not being able to swish through all that powder. When I checked in with him, I reminded him to be my voice of reason and let me know when we needed to call it a day before they closed Wolf Creek Pass and we had to have a love in at the lodge with all the other Powder Junkies (snow powder that is!) He finally told me, "momma, last run and ski to the truck" - which I did, all the way through the parking lot. It was a blast.

Friday morning, we sadly had to come home and drove for another 3 hours through snow coming down. It was hard to leave. We parted ways with my parents in Amarillo (where it was snowing on us again) and headed on to Bedford. That was a 12 hour drive and Jackson did awesome. I am not sure I would ever try that with any other kid. I certainly know I was not that well behaved at 5 and in the car for 12 hours - I remember.

Are we going back to Pagosa Springs next year??? HHHHMMMMM! Stay tuned....
